L2 MTU is defined as “maximum transmission unit” which represents the largest size of packets that an interface can transmit without the need to fragment. Overall, there are three types of MTU that need to be recognized as valid for configuration on a switch. The three are MTUs for 10/100 Mbps interfaces, 1000 Mbps interfaces, and the last which affects SVIs and routed interfaces. The commands for each of those types are:

  • 10/100 Mbps interfaces: “system MTU _____”
  • 1000 Mbps interfaces: “system MTU jumbo _____”
  • SVI & routed interfaces: “system mtu routing _____”
